The Astral Planes: The Multidimensional Self (Part 5)

When a soul leaves the body, it doesn’t always immediately return all it’s energy to the Higher Self. It may move through the astral planes — subtle realms of consciousness that act as bridges between the physical world and higher dimensions. These layers serve as transitional classrooms where the soul releases, heals, and integrates before rising into reunion with its greater Self.

The Lower Astral Plane

The first layer is the one closest to the Earth realm. It holds dense energies tied to fear, desire, and unresolved attachments. Souls who remain entangled with cravings, addictions, or unfinished business may linger here for a time. This is the realm often mistaken for “ghosts” or restless spirits, for the pull of the material world still clings. The purpose of this level is to shed the heaviest energies of incarnation, so the soul can move forward unburdened.

The Middle Astral Plane

Beyond the lower astral lies a more balanced and neutral space. Here, the soul begins to process its recent life. Many experience reunion with soul family or loved ones who welcome them, while guides and healing temples assist in restoring energy. This is where life review unfolds, where the identity of “this person” begins to soften, and where lessons are integrated. The purpose of this plane is healing, reflection, and preparation for reintegration with the Higher Self.

In the Middle Astral, the soul can create its own spaces — sanctuaries woven from intention and imagination. These realms are living reflections of consciousness, responsive to every thought and feeling. Souls build beautiful homes or gardens filled with luminous trees and rivers of light, places where peace moves like a breeze. Visitors can sometimes arrive — souls seeking understanding, guidance, or to complete soul agreements and energetic contracts. Manifestation may be effortless there; whatever is held in focus can bloom into being, reminding the soul how thought becomes form long before matter takes shape.

Within the Middle Astral exist vast learning schools — temples of wisdom where souls study the mechanics of creation, the laws of vibration, and the art of relationships. It is a realm of integration and expansion, a bridge between the density of Earth and the pure resonance of higher dimensions.

The Higher Astral Plane

The higher astral shines as a luminous realm of refinement. Souls that are less bound by earthly attachments rise here quickly, experiencing clarity and peace. In this space, the personal self dissolves into the greater awareness of all incarnations. It is here that the soul merges more deeply with the Higher Self, embodying expanded vision and a profound sense of wholeness. The purpose of this realm is union — the offering of wisdom and love gathered through experience. The soul may begin choosing new probabilities, fresh lessons, and environments that will serve the unfolding of consciousness.

Return to the Higher Self

Once the passage through the astral planes is complete, the soul’s energy fully reunites with the Higher Self, or Oversoul. The experiences and lessons of incarnation are woven into the greater blueprint, expanding the soul’s eternal library of wisdom. From this state of wholeness, the Higher Self may prepare for another multidimensional journey or choose new forms of evolution and service—such as guiding other souls, joining its soul group to operate as part of a unified field of consciousness that nurtures planetary or galactic evolution. It may also take on the role of a creator-being, assisting in the formation of new worlds, or return into complete union with Source.

Note: When speaking of the Higher Self, its soul group (or soul family) is made up of other Higher Selves that emanate from the same Monad or from closely resonant Monads within the same vibrational field.

Imagine the Astral Planes

You might imagine the astral planes as layers of atmosphere. The lower astral is heavy like fog, the middle astral as clear blue sky, and the higher astral as the thin atmosphere near space where light expands. The soul passes through these layers, shedding weight, regaining clarity, and rising at last into union with the Higher Self.

The astral planes are not final destinations. They are transitional classrooms where the soul releases, heals, and integrates before returning to the Higher Self to prepare for its next journey into incarnation.

Quick Reference Guide

Here’s the structure of the astral planes:

1. The Lower Astral Plane

  • Closest to the Earth realm.
  • Holds heavy energies tied to fear, desire, and unresolved attachments.
  • Souls that are deeply entangled with material cravings, addictions, or unfinished business may linger here.
  • This is the level often mistaken as “ghosts” or restless spirits.

Purpose: To shed the densest energies and attachments to physical life.

2. The Middle Astral Plane

  • A more balanced and neutral realm.
  • Here, souls often process their recent incarnation. They review their life, reconnect with soul family, and begin releasing identity as “this person.”
  • Healing temples and guides are often experienced in this plane — helping the soul restore its energy.
  • Many who cross over and are “met by loved ones” are entering the middle astral.
  • It is a place of effortless manifestation and learning, where consciousness reveals its creative power.

Purpose: To integrate lessons, heal, and prepare for reintegration with the Higher Self.

3. The Higher Astral Plane

  • A luminous realm of refinement.
  • Souls who are less bound by earthly attachments rise here quickly.
  • Here the soul merges more deeply with its Higher Self. The personal identity dissolves, and the broader perspective of all incarnations begins to return.
  • This is the level of clarity, peace, and expanded awareness.

Purpose: To reunite with the Higher Self, contributing all harvested wisdom from the incarnation.

4. Return to the Higher Self

  • Once the soul has completed its journey through the astral planes, its energy is gathered fully back into the Higher Self / Oversoul.
  • The Higher Self integrates the lessons into the greater blueprint, adding the lived experience to its vast library.
  • From this state of wholeness, the Higher Self may prepare for another multidimensional journey or choose new forms of evolution and service.

A Simple Image for Students

You can describe the astral planes like layers of atmosphere:

  • The lower astral is dense like fog.
  • The middle astral is like clear sky.
  • The higher astral is like the thin atmosphere near space, where light expands.

The soul passes through these layers, shedding weight, regaining clarity, and finally rising into union with the Higher Self.
